A partial capo workshop at Hometown by Randall Williams

I'll be staying up late playing cool sounding chords this weekend. Using partial capos and combining them with a regular capo opens up a world of complex possibilities, and it also makes it possible to get some fresh sounds very simply. Randall did a great job of opening the door to the possibilities, while giving us a usable foundation to get started.

After a time to practice and get some coaching everyone played an example of something using one or more of the partial capos. It was great hearing what everyone came up with and definitely a rewarding learning experience.

Randal talks about the basics of capo use and explains the difference between changing voicing and/or structure using the Drop-D™ and Short-Cut™

The League of Crafty Capoists prepares for a group performance.
Notice the use of capos in different positions and and playing above, below, and across the capo.

The chance for to practice what we'd learned with one-on-one coaching was a major plus.

We have Drop-D™ and Short-Cut™ capos in stock. (As well as the other Kyser Quick Change models) If you missed tthe clinic we'll be glad to show you a taste of the possibilities you can find using them.

The capo workshop

  • Learn how to get rich new sounds from the guitar using the Drop-D™ and Short-Cut™ capos, separately and together in more than a dozen different positions.
  • Learn the structural reasons why capos fit in certain combinations, and wow audiences with the variation you get by playing on both sides of the capo.
  • The workshop is three-part:: interactive lecture, followed by one-on-one coaching time, then participants perform one song using these new techniques. Beginners are encouraged to attend.
